Radar & lightning links
  1. Australian rainfall radar from the BoM. Single images and loops of 128 and 256km radius are available for most Australian weatherwatch radars.  In using the 256km radius images, it is important to be aware that you are looking at returns to the one radar installation, so precipitation beyond about 200km may appear much lighter than it really is, or may not appear at all. Composite radar images are only available from the Bureau for a fee. Radar coverage from individual installations is shown here. The loops may be adjusted to run in several modes and speeds, while a useful feature is the ability to use your mouse pointer to scale distances on the radar map -- see About Radar Loops for information on how to drive the system and also Interpreting Radar Images. An hourly national radar composite archive is available. A wide range of radar images and data area available from the Bureau's radar archive, for a fee. (01/09/02)

  2. Australian rainfall radar from The Weather Company's Weatherzone site.  Features of these radar presentations are the state and national composite radar images (use the links on the left of the screen), and composite images, using the returns from multiple radars when available, at both broad and local scales for all Australian radar installations. You can create animations of up to 8 hours, and overlay roads, rivers and weather districts on the maps, though this requires you to have a recent Java plugin for your browser -- details are here. On animations, if you left-click in one position, then move your mouse, a distance measurement in red will appear; very useful for estimating the movement of individual rain or storm cells. (01/09/02)

  3. Composite radar and satellite images from Australia and New Zealand from snow.barratt.com.au. A 2-hour animated radar animation of SE Australia updated every 10 minutes, together with static composite radar images for Australia and New Zealand. Also available are radar overlays on the latest satellite images. (08/09/05)

  4. New Zealand Radar from VUW, from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, covers the greater part of New Zealand. Available in real time three-hourly, with a one-week archive. (16/01/00)

  5. GPATS (Global Position and Tracking Systems) -- use the Lightning Monitor link -- provides lightning data to the Bureau of Meteorology and numerous lightning-sensitive agencies such as power companies and fire fighters. Real time data is now available freely on the Net. Maps of Australia show lightning strikes (updated each 15 minutes) and intensity (updated each hour), while graphs updated each 3 hours show the strike rates nationally and for capital cities. The capital city strike rate graphs are accompanied by maps showing the location of strikes over the past 24 hours. (16/02/06)

  6. Australian lightning tracker -- the latest LPATS lightning strike maps from The Weather Co. Click on Radar and Lightning in the index at top left. (29/12/00)

  7. Energex real time lightning strike charts for SE Queensland. (05/12/03)

  8. Northpower Storm Tracker -- realtime coverage of lightning strikes in northern NSW, from around Wanaaring in the NW to Newcastle, and north to the Queensland border (16/04/01)

  9. Current lightning detection map of Australia from LFEM (12/05/05)
