Flooding continues on NSW North Coast
Heavy rain and flooding spreads to NSW Northern Tablelands and Slopes
23Mar01
Hot in Vic, SA ahead of a change; cool in eastern WA
The NSW North Coast floods are covered in this special report.

As the low pressure system and associated upper disturbance responsible for the NSW floods and the Brisbane storm moved inland and weakened, it brought a period of heavy rain to the NSW Northern Tablelands yesterday and overnight into today. Rain fell steadily from around 6am yesterday to 3am today. Runoff into the headwaters of the Barwon River produced moderate flooding in the Severn at Ashford. The area around Glen Innes and Guyra recorded between 80 and 100mm in the 24 hours to 9am, with Gowan Brae, east of Guyra topping the list at 112mm. Glen Innes Post Office's 24 hour total of 94.8mm was its highest fall in 116 years of observation. The Wytalibah community east of Glen Innes was isolated by road when what the Severn Shire Council Director of Engineering described as "massive flood damage" occurred, washing away both approaches to the Mann River Bridge. Later in the day, Inverell received 36mm between 1.10 and 3pm in a thunderstorm

There were unusually wide temperature variations across the south of the continent today. The area of heat that has been slowly making its way around the southern coast since early March brought daytime temperatures around 10 above normal to much of Victoria today, after an uncomfortably hot March night gave SE South Australia minimum temperatures 10 to 13 above average. An substantial cool change crossed Victoria during the afternoon, dropping temperatures, but bringing gusty winds to coastal areas in SE SA, Victoria and Tasmania. In southeastern WA, a large stratocumulus deck drifted in from the Great Australian Bight around the eastern side of a strong high pressure system. Maximum temperatures in the southeast only just made it into the low 20s, 6 to 10 below, with Warburton 12 below.
