Thunderstorms which developed
in a troughline lying through central Queensland and northeastern NSW
today brought widely scattered heavy falls of up to 110mm. The trough harboured
several storms early this morning, with scattered locations on the NSW
North West Slopes and Queensland Darling Downs recording 50 to
60mm to 9 this morning. Storms recurred through the day at some places west
of the divide -- Inverell had three -- before the troughline began
a slow eastward movement around the middle of the day. Murrurundi in
the upper Hunter Valley recorded 53mm between 9am and noon from a storm
complex that moved northeast. By late afternoon, a line of storms
arced gracefully for nearly 2,000 km from the southeastern corner of the
Gulf of Carpentaria to the NSW Mid North Coast. A large area of storms,
which developed in this trough over the NSW Northern Tablelands moved southeast
during the evening, giving another round of heavy rain to parts of the Northwest
Slopes and Mid North Coast just drying out from the afternoon storms. The
heaviest falls for the day ended 9am Monday were at Macksville with
109.5mm and Nambucca Heads 106, while there were many registrations
between 60 and 80mm from Taree to Coffs Harbour and inland to Murrurundi
to Armidale. Woolbrook, 50km ENE of Tamworth, had its heaviest March day's
rain in 43 years of observations with 84mm in the gauge, while nearby Walcha
had 90mm. In Queensland, falls were very isolated, but Blackall
received 66mm between 3 and 9pm, and several centres in the parched Warrego
to Darling Downs area recorded over 50mm. Full details are below
and in the heavy 24-hour rain list for 26 March.
Cold southeasterlies continued to bring record cold overnight temperatures to Western Australia this morning, with the chilliest area moving into the east and north of the state, and into northern South Australia where Marla recorded its coldest March morning since records began 15 years ago. In WA's east, Warburton and Carnegie again broke their record low temperatures set yesterday morning. Cashmere Downs recorded 7.7 after the minimum of 7.6 yesterday broke its record of 8.2 in 28 years of observation. See also this special report. |
