Brisbane residents sweated
through an unusually warm night for this time of year. The Airport recorded
a minimum of 24.7, only 5.2° above normal, but not far off the record of
25.4 on 10 March 1995, in over 50 years of observation. The Brisbane City
automatic weather station recorded a rounded figure of 25°. The highest
March minimum at the old BoM Regional Office site, which closed in 1986
after 100 years of observations, was 25.5 on 14 March 1973. Coastal areas
north of Brisbane also felt the heat during the day. Heron Island, 80km
NE of Gladstone, recorded its highest March maximum temperature in 20 years
with 31.8, while Double Island Point Lighthouse, 160km north of Brisbane,
recorded a top of 33.1, 1.4° above its previous March record in 37 years.
More new minimum temperature records were set in northern and eastern WA and western NT this morning, as cold, dry southern air spread northwards across the region. See special report. |
