With a high anchored over SE
Australia for the past 5 days, north to northeasterly winds have been directing
hot desert air over the continent's southwest, with some part of southern
WA experiencing daytime temperatures 10 to 12° above normal every day
since the beginning of the month.
A low that formed in the monsoonal trough off northeastern Arnhem Land, NT, on Tuesday moved slowly west along the coast today, threatening to develop into a cyclone and bringing heavy showers to the area. Elcho Island recorded 98mm between 3pm and 9pm. Showers in the monsoon trough were also responsible for some respectable totals on Cape York Peninsula, Qld, today. Lockhart River, 110km north of Cairns, recorded 136.9 for the day ended 9 this morning, while Horn Island, just west of Cape York, registered 128mm in 3 hours to 9pm, 69.2 falling in just over half an hour to 8pm. |
