TC Sose brings heavy seas to Qld and NSW coasts
Torrential rain from Sydney to Newcastle
Tropical Cyclone Sose, which formed early last Thursday morning, 5 April, to the north of New Caledonia, has been moving slowly south for the past 5 days developing strong swells onto the Australian coast from Newcastle to north of Brisbane. Surfing conditions today and into the Easter holiday at the weekend were hazardous, while the huge swells combined with high tides are taking their toll on northern NSW river estuaries still recovering from floods. NSW Fisheries Department's Craig Copeland told ABC News that swells are churning up river entrances, scattering spawning fish and making it hard for them to enter rivers to breed. Swells of up to 5 metres were reported coming ashore along the Queensland Gold Coast on Wednesday.

The slow-moving tail end of a southeasterly change that rippled up the NSW coast this morning generated several hours of torrential rain from Sydney to Newcastle together with several thunderstorms. In Sydney, the heaviest rain fell from soon after midnight to around 6am, with the Observatory Hill site in central Sydney recording 75mm in the 6 hours to 6am. No thunder was reported during what observers said were heavy showers, suggesting that the rain was caused by a localised but very slow-moving zone of converging winds in the fresh southeasterlies following the weak change. The heaviest falls were in Sydney's northern suburbs, where St Ives recorded 81.6mm for the 24 hours to 9am. Other heavy falls are shown below.

As the feature moved up the coast toward Newcastle during the morning, storms developed bringing heavy rain to the Central Coast, lower Hunter Valley, and particularly around Lake Macquarie. Houses, shops and roads were flooded in Charlestown, Mount Hutton, Speer's Point and Cardiff in Newcastle's southwest, while there were numerous car accidents. Narara, just north of Gosford, recorded 36.4mm in one hour to 7am, while Newcastle University reported 102.8mm for the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday.
