A strong cold front swept across southeastern states today, ushering in wintry gales, hail and snow. The front crossed Tasmania between 5 and 9 this morning, dropping the temperature atop Mt Wellington to -1.3 at midday, and bringing squally winds, hail and light highland snow. In Victoria, the front took from around 6am to 3pm to traverse the coast from west to east, producing wind gusts to 145km/h at Wilsons Promontory and 100km/h over open water at Kingfish Oil Rig, offshore from Sale. The gusty change raised dust as it passed through southern NSW, and gave light snow to the Snowy Mountains and wind gusts around 90km/h along the NSW South and Central Coasts. |
