A low pressure system developed east of the NSW Mid North Coast overnight, strengthening winds and moving heavy coastal rain north from the Hunter toward Taree and Port Macquarie. Overnight and into this morning, the heaviest rain was on the northern side of the lower Hunter Valley, with Clarence Town recording 140mm in the day ended 9am, and locations between Nelson Bay and Gloucester reporting falls of more than 100mm. Forster recorded 84.8mm, all falling between 3pm yesterday and 9 this morning. Minor flooding was reported in lower Hunter streams. During the day, steady moderate to heavy rain continued in the same area. Short-duration falls were not heavy enough to make it into the high rainfall list below, with most places reporting periods of steady rain between 5 and 10mm/hour. Clarence Town recorded a further 126.2mm to 9am Tuesday, giving it a 2-day total of 266.2mm, while Dungog PO's 104mm this morning and 109.8 on Tuesday morning gave a respectable 2-day total of 213.8mm. Comboyne recorded 159 and Taree Airport 122mm for the day ended 9am Tuesday. Rain eased after midnight tonight as the low moved slowly away to the east. |
