Record cold May night in Tasmania
This morning produced a crop of record low minimum temperatures across Tasmania, and a new lowest-ever May minimum for the state. A new automatic weather station at Liawenee, on the western shore of the Central Plateau's Great Lake, recorded an overnight minimum of -9.7, beating the previous record of -8.9 set at Bothwell, in the centre of the state, on 29 May 1975. The Liawenee AWS replaces a manual station nearby, and appears to be sited in a particularly cold location, as this station also set a new state record low temperature last month. Launceston Airport registered its lowest May minimum in over 60 years of record with a reading of -4.8, whilst Launceston City's minimum of -2 was only 1° above its May record. Hobart's minimum of 1° was just half a degree above the city's record low for May. At Cambridge, near Hobart Airport and just 1˝km from the sea, an unofficial minimum of -3.5 was measured, and water froze in buckets.

A high pressure system formed over Tasmania yesterday, trapping the cold air brought over the state from the south over the past few days under a temperature inversion. Under clear skies and in calm conditions, katabatic winds developed as cold, dense air drained off higher country, bringing exceptionally low temperatures to coastal locations. At Scamander on the east coast, where the recording station is just behind the beach, the temperature dropped to zero, equalling its May record over 17 years. Farther south, Bicheno's 1.4 was just 0.5 above its 25-year record.
