Continuing cold clear nights
across tropical northeastern Australia saw May minimum temperature
records fall for two Queensland cities this morning. Gympie recorded
a low of 1.0°, 9.8 below average and 0.1 below its previous record in 36
years. Proserpine Airport, with only an 11 year period of record,
also established a new low when the thermometer fell to 5.0°, 11.5 below
the May average.
An approaching low pressure system brought patchy but in places heavy rain to central and southwestern coastal areas in Western Australia today. Jurien, on the coast 180km north of Perth, recorded 56.2mm for the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, while Geraldton Airport recorded 45.2. Most falls were lighter, though Busselton Airport recorded 39mm in 6 hours to noon. Unusually, the low hung about off the coast near Perth for several days, gradually weakening and finally losing its identity when it crossed coast north of the city on Thursday night. A Tasman Sea low continued to direct strong moist southeasterlies along the NSW Central Coast today. Heavy showers fell overnight and during the morning peak in central and eastern Sydney, with local flooding causing traffic problems. Both Sydney's Observatory Hill (at the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge) and Rose Bay to the east recorded 87mm for the 24 hours to 9am, with Observatory Hill recording 35mm in 6 hours to 3am, then 54mm in 6 hours to noon. |
