Sluggish shower dowses SE Sydney
In an excellent demonstration of how significant local events can occur in apparently benign weather situations, nearly 100mm fell in a 3 hour downpour around Sydney's Botany Bay this morning under the centre of a 1032hPa high pressure system. Little Bay, on the ocean side of the La Perouse peninsula and 15km SSE of the Sydney CBD, recorded 94mm in 3 hours to 8.10am, while stations to the north and south received little or no rain.

Heavy showers began appearing on radar off the coast to the east of the Royal National Park before midnight, and made landfall south of Botany Bay around 3am. By 4am, a small cluster of very heavy showers lay along the southern shore of Botany Bay and across the La Perouse peninsula, with individual shower cells moving from the southeast. Between 5 and 8am, these amalgamated into a small rain area extending WNW to Sydney Airport and Bexley, which recorded around 30mm, and tapering off to the north of Bankstown. However, heavy showers continued to form around the coast near Little Bay, giving the automatic station there 31, 37 and 21mm for the 3 hourly totals between 5 and 8am.

Although the area was under a strong high pressure system and balloon traces from Sydney Airport indicated only marginal instability, the wind from about 1km above the surface over the area was a moist southeasterly undercut by a 15 to 20km/h katabatic or overnight land breeze from the WNW. While it would need a more detailed study to be sure of the cause of this unusual event, it seems likely that a convergence zone developed off the coast between the cool land breeze and the overall southeasterly flow, enhancing instability and producing a very small area of strong uplift that moved only very slowly to the WNW, while continuing to rebuild in the offshore convergence area until the land breeze died out around 9am. Strong cumulonimbus development was still evident over the area as late as 11am, one cell drifting across Royal National Park and dropping 17mm in 15 minutes around 1.30pm.
