Warm spell in the east breaks June records, brings storms

Overnight minima were between 8 and 12 above normal over much of the nation's east. BoM

Melbourne experienced its warmest June night since records began in 1855, when the mercury fell only as far as 17.4° overnight. The official minimum, which is for the 24 hour period to 9am, was 16.1, the value on the thermometer when it was reset at 9am yesterday. The previous official highest June minimum was 14.8, set on 8 June 1995. Records may well have fallen at other locations, as a broad swathe of Victoria, western NSW and western Queensland reported minima in the mid to high teens, with departures of more than 10° above average in many areas.

Warm conditions continued through the day, despite general cloud cover and patchy thunderstorms and areas of rain. Gunnedah NSW recorded its highest June maximum in 44 years' record, when the mercury rose to 24.0°. The trough system that gave South Australia heavy rain yesterday continued to produce scattered heavy falls as it tracked east into Victoria, NSW and Queensland. With the official start of the ski season coming up this weekend, heavy rain, accompanied by gale force winds, was not welcome on the NSW and Victorian Alps, where 39mm fell at Mt Hotham between 6am and 9pm. A broad area of thunderstorms gave heavy falls in western NSW and SW Queensland late this evening (see story for 8 June 2001).
