About Australian Weather News
Unseasonally warm in Tasmania, cool in NSW, Qld
Wet and windy in eastern Victoria, SE NSW
Warm air originating from north of New Zealand swept across Tasmania today, directed by a trough extending NE from Bass Strait. The mining town of Waratah in the state's northwest recorded a top of 12.5°, its warmest July day in 18 years of computer records. Elsewhere on the West Coast, Strahan recorded 14.0, Queenstown 14.2 and Strathgordon 13.6 as a föhn effect dried out the mild easterlies descending Tasmania's Central Plateau. North of the trough, central and northern NSW shivered as a cold pool stagnated over the area, the temperature at Glen Innes only reaching 6°. Inland Northern Queensland experienced an unusually widespread frost for the tropics. Dry, descending air under a broad ridge combined with calm conditions to drop the thermometer to 0° at Richmond and Urandangie, and around 2° at Mt Isa, Julia Creek and Georgetown, all 7 to 9 below average.

A tight pressure gradient around the western end of the trough in eastern Bass Strait produced moderate falls of rain in East Gippsland and in far southeastern NSW. Falls of 40 to 50mm were recorded along the coast and nearby mountains to 9 this morning. A small low in the trough, which remained stationary near Gabo Island overnight, moved slowly up the NSW South Coast during the day bringing wind gusts to 100km/h at Green Cape, 25km SE of Eden, and thrusting the rainband into the NSW Snowy Mountains and the tablelands to their east (see report for 8 July 2001).
