A cloudmass east of a surface
trough lying from central Queensland to the NSW South Coast became
active late yesterday giving widespread general rain and a few embedded
thunderstorms. Mungindi, on the NSW/Qld border 100km northwest of
Moree, recorded 71.5mm to 9am, its heaviest 24 hour July total in 112 years.
Thallon, 40km north, recorded 93.4mm, while many locations in inland
southern Queensland and across the border on the NSW northern plains recorded
50mm or more. Rain spread east to the Queensland south coast and farther
southeast into NSW during the day as a surface low, which developed early
morning near Mungindi, moved slowly southeast. Rainfall details are below,
and in the 24-hour rainfall section for 27 July. Much of the rain fell steadily
over 12 to 24 hours, giving the area a much-needed soaking after an unusually
dry June. Runoff in the Gwydir catchment was sufficient to bring
river levels close to minor flood stage, while in Tamworth water entered
two homes after a heavy downpour and the Newell Highway north of Moree was
closed briefly by flooding.
Clear skies and low humidity produced unusually wide-ranging temperatures across southwestern WA today. While overnight minima away from the coast were 4 to 6° below normal, daytime temperatures were 4 to 8 above. At Perth Airport, the temperature ranged from a low of 5.6 to a high of 24.7, the range of 19.1° breaking the previous July record of 18.5 set in 1982. |
