High temperatures for July were widespread across southern Western Australia today. Unusually, both overnight minima and daytime maxima were commonly 8 to 11° above average. At five weather stations, ranging from the central north to the south coast and east to the Goldfields, it was the hottest July day since records began 40 to 50 years ago (see below). Strengthening northerlies ahead of a slow-moving trough were responsible. The record warmth also allowed unseasonably high humidity levels to develop, which combined with instability ahead of an advancing trough to produce several hours of torrential rain around Perth during the evening, and break some long-standing July rainfall records (details in story for 30 July 2001).
