Cold, windy in NSW, Vic, Tas 14Oct01 |
Cold, gusty southwesterly winds spread across Victoria and southern and central NSW today as a secondary low pressure system that developed west of Tasmania yesterday deepened to 989hPa before crossing the island state this morning. The strong winds developed as a tight pressure gradient formed between the low and a high of around 1025hPa moving in across northern South Australia. The strongest winds were reported from the usual, most exposed coastal locations, with Wilsons Promontory Vic recording 133km/h and Cape Grim Tas 115km/h, both around the middle of the day. On the Victorian Alps, a gust of 130km/h was recorded on the summit of Mt Hotham. A tongue of cold air with an embedded cold pool moved across central NSW during the day, giving light snow that did not settle to Oberon and Orange. Patchy snowfalls continued on the NSW Snowy Mountains, giving some hope to skiers after a dismal start to the season. Perisher Valley has recorded 104mm (melted) precipitation in the 4 days to 9am, most falling as snow. Even Thredbo Village was able to report 10cm of snow on the ground at its 3pm observation today. Falls Creek in the Victorian Alps recorded 27mm (melted) during the past 4 days, and had a snow depth of just 57cm at 9 this morning. |
