A marked middle atmosphere trough lying above the tail of a weak surface front brought thunderstorms and several hours of heavy rain to Victoria's northeast this morning. Falls Creek recorded 50mm between midnight and 6am, with many centres in or just west of the Alps recording 40mm or more in the 24 hours to 9am. The modest surface cool change swept across Victoria's Gippsland yesterday afternoon and evening, leaving a nearly stationary surface trough stranded to the north of the Great Divide. Instability was not particularly great, but the thermal difference across the trough was, with overnight minima across southern NSW around 8° above normal while those in southern Victoria and Tasmania were 4 to 6 below. A very sharp trough at 500hPa (around 18,000 feet) was evident over NE Victoria on the upper charts for 10pm Thursday, and heavy rain appears to have resulted from strong convergence into the trough. |
