Both overnight and daytime
temperatures today were 8 to 14° above the September average across most
of South Australia and in western NSW and Victoria. Robe,
on South Australia's southeast coast, broke its September temperature record
by a long margin when the mercury rose to 26.6. The previous highest was
24.8 in 44 years of computer records. A weak cold front crossed southern
SA during the day bringing some relief after 6 days of generally well above
average temperatures. The greatest departures from normal during the day
were in western Victoria, where Mildura Airport recorded a top of
34.2, 14 above.
The warm, moist northwesterly flow ahead of the front brought a short period of heavy rain across northern Tasmania during the morning. Between midnight and 6am, Smithton Airport recorded 27mm, Wynyard Airport 42 and Sheffield 29, while Devonport Airport recorded 39mm between midnight and 9am. Wynyard Airport's 24 hour total of 51mm was the station's highest for September in nearly 30 years of record. The rainband lightened off as it moved east, but still gave Launceston 22mm between 3am and noon and Friendly Beaches on the NE coast 21mm between 6am and noon. |
