Between 150 and over 300mm
of rain fell along a short stretch of the north Queensland coast
south of Cairns overnight. Babinda Post Office reported 317mm for
the 24 hours to 9am. Innisfail recorded 145mm between 3pm yesterday
and 9 this morning, while South Johnstone Mill, 8km to the SSW, recorded
139mm in the 12 hours to 9am, 50mm of which fell in the 3 hours before midnight.
Falls to the north and south were considerably lighter, Cairns Airport receiving
36mm in 3 hours to 9am for a 24 hour total of 43mm. The succession of torrential
showers appears to have resulted from local convergence in a light southeasterly
airflow, combined with the strong uplift for onshore winds provided by the
1500 metre Bartle Frere range just behind Innisfail. The focus of
heavy rain moved north during the day and evening, giving Port Douglas 107.7
and Daintree Village 90.6mm for the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday.
A pair of active trough lines advanced across northern SA and the southern NT during the afternoon and evening, spawning scattered but intense electrical storms and dust storms. Alice Springs Airport recorded a gust of 91km/h just after 2pm and hail was reported from Watarrka, 250km to the WSW. By midnight, high cloud generated by the cumulonimbus anvils of the storms had spread east to cover all of eastern SA and western NSW. |
