A major cloudband that developed yesterday over SA ahead of a trough brought widespread falls of 10 to 50mm across eastern SA overnight before spreading into NSW, Victoria and Tasmania today. The euphoniously named Oodla Wirra, 100km ENE of Port Pirie, recorded 48.4mm for the 24 hours to 9am. Other heavy overnight falls in the state's north were Andamooka 31mm and Hawker 35mm in the 15 hours to 6am, and Yongala 37mm in 9 hours to 6am. The rain closed many roads in the state's northeast around Oodnadatta, Coober Pedy and Roxby Downs. See the report on 24 October for details of rain in eastern states. Overnight minimum temperatures were between 6 and 11° above normal across the western halves of Victoria and NSW and the southwestern third of Queensland due to the cloud cover and rain. |
