Summer heat has arrived in
Western Australia's far north, with the first maximum temperatures
over 45° recorded today. Marble Bar, which reached 45 yesterday,
got to 45.3 today, while most centres in the Pilbara, southern Kimberley
and far northeast had tops between 43 and 45.
It was a different story in western Queensland, where clear skies and dry southeasterly winds following a surge of colder southern air dropped overnight minima to wintry levels. Mount Isa AP's low of 11 was 10.5 below the November average. In the NSW Snowy Mountains, the overnight minimum at Kosciusko Chalet, Charlotte Pass, sank to -8.5, just two degrees shy of their record November low of -10.6, set last Monday. Nearby Perisher Valley only got down to -4.0. In a remarkably localised downpour, Cardwell Qld recorded 158mm in the 6 hours to 9 this morning. The observer reported 125mm in 3 hours with moderate rain reducing visibility to 1km at 6am, and a further 33mm with a thunderstorm to 9am. The nearest other raingauges, Bilyana, 15km to the NW and Gowrie Creek, about 25km to the SW, reported only 5 and 6mm respectively. A tiny isolated cloud is evident in the Cardwell area on satellite images at the time. |
