Continuing
cold in the Centre as rain clears Coldest start to December for 32 years in Adelaide Blustery in the southeast |
While rain cleared from much
of Central Australia today, continuing cloud cover kept daytime temperatures
remarkably low for mid December. Maximum temperatures were in the low 20s,
with much of southern NT, northern SA and central eastern WA maxima between
10 and 17° below average, in most cases for the second or third day in a
row. Thunderstorms that developed on the northern edge of the cold airmass
gave Tennant Creek Airport a wind gust of 102km/h this afternoon.
Adelaide has had its coldest start to December (and summer) since 1969, the Bureau of Meteorology reported today. The average temperature for the first 10 days of December this year was 21.9 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees below the normal temperature of 26.1 degrees for this period in Adelaide. The previous record was set in 1969 when the average temperature for the first 10 days of December was 21.8 degrees. In addition, Adelaide has just experienced four consecutive December days with a maximum temperature below 20 degrees, an event which last occurred in December 1970. Strong gusty winds accompanied a series of troughs ahead of a much colder southwesterly change as they swept around the Tasmanian and Victorian coasts. Wilsons Promontory recorded a top gust of 113km/h, while the Kingfish A oil rig of the Victorian coast near Sale, reported a gust of 100km/h over open water. Other strong gusts are listed below. |
