NSW bushfires continue
Record cold in the southeast
Downpour in Central Australia
See special report on the NSW bushfires.

Cold, dry southern air surging across Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW yesterday allowed temperatures to drop to record levels overnight. Albury, Tocumwal, Narrandera and Wangaratta all reported their lowest minimum temperatures on record for December this morning, with temperatures 6 to 9° below normal across northern Victoria and southern inland NSW. Frost was widespread on the NSW Southwest Slopes and Southern Tablelands and in Victoria's Northeast, with Cooma Airport recording a low of -3.5.

Thunderstorms gave Giles Met Office, just over the WA border west of Alice Springs, their December average monthly rainfall in a few hours. 20.2mm fell in 23 minutes to 9.47pm in the first storm, and a second early on Friday morning topped up the 24 hour total to 38mm.
