See special
report on the NSW bushfires.
Isolated heavy rain from slow moving thunderstorms continued to be a feature of tropical weather across Queensland and the Northern Territory today with a trough lying from central southern Qld to just south of Darwin. In Queensland, storms that developed over Cape York Peninsula yesterday afternoon drifted south overnight to give Julia Creek, 250km E of Mt Isa, 61mm between 3 and 6am, 42.2 of that falling in just over an hour before 6am. Storms that developed in the trough system described yesterday dumped 60mm on Injune, 80km NNW of Roma, between noon and 3pm. However, the widespread flood rains produced by thunderstorms over the past few days did not continue. Minor to moderate flooding continues in streams flowing towards the southern Qld border -- the Warrego, Paroo, Bulloo and Barcoo Rivers and Wallam and Mungallala Creeks -- as well as on the Mackenzie and Dawson Rivers west of Rockhampton. Flood peaks in these streams will take some weeks to work their way downstream, and will be reported in the other extremes section of the National Extremes. A storm that developed south of Katherine NT yesterday afternoon tracked westwards overnight to give Port Keats, 250km SW of Darwin, 86.4mm in the two hours to 4 this morning. |
