Flood peaks are making their
way down most of the river systems in southwestern Queensland after
last Sunday night's intense thunderstorms. Quilpie in the state's
far southwest is isolated, with a major flood peak passing the town this
afternoon, the second peak from prolific storms in the past few weeks. Both
the railway line and the road between Charleville and Quilpie are cut by
the Ward River just west of Charleville, and the Bulloo at Quilpie, stranding
mail, supplies and travellers to the town in Charleville. Roads north and
south of Quilpie are also flooded.
An unusually intense burst of cool southern air for mid-summer swept over southern WA overnight bringing record low minimum temperatures for January to places as far apart as Manjimup, Albany, Windy Harbour and Salmon Gums. At Albany Airport, where computerised records exist for 37 years, the minimum of 4.8° this morning knocked nearly 1° off the old record of 5.6. Bridgetown in the southwest recorded the lowest temperature overnight at 2.0° |
