An unusually compact and long-lived upper cold pool produced some moderate overnight rain across the Nullarbor Plain area of WA and SA. The upper low cut off from an eastward-moving upper trough on Thursday morning, and has remained over southeastern WA ever since. Nullarbor Roadhouse in SA recorded 40mm for the 24 hours to 9 this morning, while Eyre, across the border in WA, recorded 31mm. Upper air temperatures of around 3° have been recorded at 850hPa (about 1.5km up) in the cold pool, which is about 10° below the norm for early April. Persistent cool SW to SE winds onto the Great Australian Bight coast have led to a long period of cloudy to overcast days, with the Eyre observer commenting this morning that there has been little or no sunshine for 15 days. |
