![]() NEWSBITS: Heavy showers, storms NT Top End and N Qld coast |
An area of active storms crossed western Victoria during the late afternoon and evening giving localised heavy rain and strong wind gusts together with some spectacular electrical activity. Cloud tops to 12km were reported over the Otways by the Bureau of Meteorology around 6pm. Bendigo Airport reported a wind gust of 106km/h at 5.33pm, while Hamilton Airport recorded 20mm of rain during the storm, though heavier rain is believed to have fallen in the area. Earlier in the day, storms were widespread though innocuous in SA. An excellent analysis of the event from a forecaster's perspective, by Kevin Parkyn is here. NEWSBITS: An upper trough with enhanced instability lying across the Northern Territory Top End again produced scattered storms with moderate rainfalls today. A moist strong and gusty ESE stream onto the north Queensland coast brought 50 to 65mm of rain to the area around Innisfail for the 24 hours to 9am, and further moderate falls of 30 to 75mm for the 24 hours to 9am Saturday. Innisfail, Tully and particularly the mountainside settlement of Topaz benefit from orographically enhanced rainfall in ESE airstream situations such as this. Tropical Cyclone Bonnie continued to move steadily westwards well to the north of WA maintaining a central pressure of 985hPa during the day. |
