Rainfalls of between 100 and 200mm were recorded on the NSW South Coast today. Montague Island recorded 202mm for the 48 hours to 9am Tuesday, most of which fell during today. Moruya Airport registered 115mm in the 24 hours ended 9am and a further 22mm to 3pm. Other heavy falls are listed below and in the national extremes for Tuesday. The rain was produced by a moist easterly onshore flow under an increasingly unstable upper atmosphere ahead of a cold pool lingering over western Victoria. A small low pressure system developed east of Wollongong mid-morning, then drifted southwest toward the South Coast before washing out late afternoon. The brief intensification in rain caused by the low gave Montague Island 60.2mm in the two hours to 4pm. NEWSBITS: Thunderstorms fired up again across central and northwestern NSW mid-afternoon and continued well into Tuesday morning. Rainfall was again patchy and mostly light. Both overnight and daytime temperatures in southern central WA reached 8 to 10° above normal today. Heavy showers on the North Queensland coast and peninsula gave some heavy falls this morning and again during the evening. Palmerville, 200km NW of Cairns, recorded 45.4mm between 3 and 5pm, 30mm falling in just under half an hour to 4pm. |
