The low pressure system that moved down the NSW coast yesterday and today was stationary off the NSW South Coast this evening. A long tongue of moist air and heavy rain extended down the eastern flank of the low and its attendant trough, curved under the low and arrived overnight in Victoria's East Gippsland region. The heaviest rain fell northwest of Bairnsdale where Bulumwaal recorded 87mm in the 24 hours to 9am, though an unofficial report of 180mm (period unknown) was reported by ABC Radio at 1pm today. Mt Moornapa, 40km NW of Bairnsdale, recorded 50mm in the day ended 9am yesterday, a further 64mm to 9 this morning, and another 35mm to 3pm. The conveyor belt of rain moving down through the central Tasman gave Lord Howe Island 94mm for the day ended 9am, its highest one-day April total in at least 14 years. |
