Heavy rain fell over Victoria's East Gippsland overnight, accompanied by strong winds. Falls of 50 to 90mm in the 24 hours to 9am were common, causing moderate flooding in the lower Snowy River, minor flooding in the Cann and Mitchell Rivers, as well as local flooding and significant rises in the Bemm, Genoa and Buchan Rivers. Between 100 and 250mm has fallen in the area over the past few days, leading to three landslips on the Omeo Highway between Bruthen and Ensay. Strengthening winds overnight brought down trees and branches on the Bruthen to Nowa Nowa Road and around Orbost, where a rising Snowy River blocked roads, cutting some school bus services. Rain continued in the east through the day, easing soon after midnight. Both raingauges at Combienbar, in the mountain valley behind Club Terrace, recorded 140mm for the 2 days to 9am Monday, while Club Terrace itself recorded 147.6mm. The acrobatic low responsible for the rain performed some new tricks today. The low formed off the NSW North Coast on Wednesday morning, moved south on Thursday and remained almost stationary off Gabo Island on Friday and Saturday. Yesterday afternoon, it suddenly deepened in response to a small injection of colder air aloft. Today, the low drifted slowly back up the coast again, filling slightly and spawning four centres by 4am Monday covering the western and central Tasman. Gales were recorded on the NSW South Coast after the low began its northward movement and before it weakened, with Montague Island reporting a gust to 100km/h at 1.40pm |
