![]() NEWSBITS: Hot for late April in WA Pilbara |
Storms this morning brought heavy rain to the Queensland Gold Coast and the far North Coast of NSW. Various raingauges around the Springbrook Plateau behind the Gold Coast recorded 50 to 86.8mm for the 24 hours to 9am, while Coolangatta Airport recorded 35.4mm between 5.30 and 9am, and Gold Coast Seaway had the same amount in just 2 hours to 9am. Rain continued in the area after the 9am rainfall registration cut-off time, with Logan City recording 49.8mm in the 24 hours to 9am Monday, about half that falling in further storms overnight. While the rain was welcome, it hasn't eased the serious water shortage on the Gold Coast where a total ban on garden sprinklers is expected to be introduced next month. Over the border, Doon Doon in the hills near Nimbin recorded 62mm to 9am. Cooler air aloft moving in behind a weak surface trough last night was responsible for the storms, which redeveloped across northern NSW and southern Queensland late this afternoon. St George received 1cm hail and 17.2mm of rain in just under half an hour to 4pm. Other isolated heavy falls show up in the rainfall reports for the 24 hours to 9am Monday, with 63.6mm at Croppa Creek (NSW Northwest Slopes) and 54mm at Collarenebri standing out. NEWSBITS: The eastern Pilbara in WA has been experiencing an exceptionally warm April. Much of the area has not had a below normal maximum temperature since 31 March. Today's top temperature at Roebourne of 41.7° was only 1.7 below the highest April maximum in 42 years of computerised records. |
