About Australian Weather News

Heat records continue to fall in WA, SA
For a second day, a strong northerly airstream, hot for May, gave much of southern WA and SA daytime temperatures 8 to 13° above the May average. Several centres in WA and SA broke temperature records set yesterday, while places on South Australia's Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas and around Adelaide recorded their hottest May days in 40 years or more (details, including records broken, are below). In WA, although the far southwest coastal fringe enjoyed a respite, the remainder of the state experienced top temperatures in the 30s, with most of the central and southern areas reporting maxima 8 to 13 above normal. The hot day followed an uncomfortably warm night with many centres recording minima in the low to mid 20s, similarly around 8 to 13 above average. Overnight thunderstorms in the southwest and Great Southern did little more than produce a light show; however more substantial storms ahead of a cold front that crossed the southwest coast late evening gave some heavy falls and strong wind gusts. Bunbury recorded 28mm between 9pm and midnight of which 11.4mm fell in just 13 minutes. Rottnest Island off Perth recorded a top wind gust of 102km/h at 12.25am Friday.
