NEWSBITS: Cold night on NSW Northern Tablelands; Thunderstorm and gale force winds in Perth; Heavy rain in East Gippsland |
NEWSBITS: Clear skies and light winds in the wake of the cold outbreak earlier in the week saw overnight temperatures plummet on the NSW Northern Tablelands. The Agricultural Research Station at Glen Innes recorded its lowest August minimum in 30 years of computerised records with a reading of -7.5, while the Glen Innes airport AWS recorded a cracking -11.8. Famed frost-hollow Woolbrook, between Walcha and Bendemeer, recorded -10.0, while Armidale Uni recorded -8.6. The cold spread into SE Queensland, where Oakey's minimum of -5.5 was 9.2 below normal. A frontal system and storm that crossed Perth after 9pm blacked out 3,000 homes and caused minor damage to sheds, roofs and fences across the city. Wind gusted to 113km/h at Rottnest Island west of Perth. There were some heavy 24-hour falls in Victoria's East Gippsland, with Genoa recording 54mm. |
