![]() NEWSBITS: A wet time in Seal Rocks NSW; heavy seas off Sydney |
It was an unusually cold start to the day across the NT and northern SA. Most of the Territory away from the coast recorded minimum temperatures between 6 and 11 below normal, with Wave Hill's 2.2 a whopping 11° below normal. In Alice Springs, the minimum temperature at the airport was -4.1, equalling the site's lowest recorded August temperature in 60 years of record. South of the border, Marla's minimum of -2.1 broke the truck-stop settlement's previous August minimum in a relatively short 16 year record. Cape Northumberland, South Australia's most southerly point, also set a new August minimum temperature record with a low of -1.2. NEWSBITS: Seal Rocks is a small settlement about 90km up the NSW coast from Newcastle. This section of the NSW coast is unique in that it trends nearly west - east, and in a moist southerly airstream will get significant rainfall while the rest of the coastline, which is nearly parallel to the windflow, remains nearly dry. The southerlies of the past two days have demonstrated this well, with the Sugarloaf Point lighthouse near Seal Rocks recording 114.4mm in the 48 hours to 9 this morning. Nearby Nelson Bay recorded 67mm in the same period and a few other locations in the area recorded up to 30mm. The rest of the NSW coast was nearly dry. The waverider buoy off Bondi, Sydney, recorded peak waves of 12 metres overnight in a heavy southerly swell. |
