Cold, dry air from the cold outbreak that pushed through southeastern states at the beginning of the week arrived on southeasterly winds flowing over the Northern Territory's Top End yesterday. Low humidity, clear skies and light, offshore winds allowed minimum temperatures to drop to record levels at four centres (see box below). Both Katherine and Daly Waters recorded minima more than 10° below average. Darwin Airport 's minimum of 13.9 was a record for so late in August, and the third lowest August minimum on record. Some unusually low dew points were recorded; some of the lowest at 9am were Territory Grape Farm near Alice Springs -16.5, Tennant Creek Airport -16.4, Jervois in the southeast -13.4, Daly Waters -10.1, and Darwin Airport, near the coast, -2.0. The absence of moisture in the air allows temperatures to drop much faster overnight. |
