NEWSBITS: Showers bring some respite to a dry NSW coast; Storms develop in central Queensland; Unusual temperatures and low humidity continue in NT Top End |
NEWSBITS: The best rain in a month fell on parts of the NSW North and Central Coasts today, though falls were patchy and confined to areas very near the coastal fringe. On the North Coast, Ballina Town recorded 50mm for the 48 hours to 9am Monday, while Dorrigo recorded 26mm for the same period. Heavy showers, mostly this morning, gave Sydney's northeastern suburbs upwards of 20mm over the 48 hours, with Belrose recording 48mm. Most centres along the coast, however, recorded 5mm or less. A developing trough west of the ranges in Queensland is drawing moist northeasterlies into the system which, combined with cold air aloft, led to widespread thunderstorms today though only scattered rain. Today's diurnal temperature range at Darwin Airport of 17.7° (maximum 32.7, minimum 15.0 was the sixth highest on record for any month and the highest since 1942. Blair Trewin writes: "The top 5, and 17 of the top 22, are all from late July and early August, 1942 - including the record of 21.2, set on 29 July when Darwin had its lowest min on record, 10.4. I'm suspicious that there might have been a temporary station relocation, perhaps because of war damage, but there is no documentary evidence of this. The dewpoint of -9.9 at 3pm is not a record (-18.0 at 0600 on 2 September 1986), but it is the lowest since 1991." |
