The best rain since the first week of June and the most widespread since mid-April has fallen over eastern Queensland and northeastern NSW over the past few days. There were substantial falls yesterday and today in SE Qld, with many registrations over 50mm in the 24 hours to 9 this morning (see Rainfall Extremes below). While creeks have started running in parts of the state's southeast, the falls are too light for water restrictions to be eased, and while some farmers are now planning to plant crops, the rain has not broken the drought in the 39 shires in the state that still remain drought-declared. The rain has boosted sugar cane farmers' prospects for a 2003 crop, with falls of 50 to 100mm in the prime cane growing areas around Bundaberg. Significant rain also spilt over the state border into the NSW Northern Tablalands and North Coast, with general falls of 20 to 40mm.
