A vigorous cold front crossed Tasmania late yesterday, turning the winds cold SSW during today and allowing light snowfalls to settle down to the 500m level. In Queenstown near the west coast, residents awoke to find the top half of Mt Owen coated with snow, while snow fell overnight as low as Maydena in the upper Derwent Valley at an altitude of 275m. Overnight minimum temperatures were unusually cold along WA's northwest coast this morning. Roebourne, with a minimum of 6.4, was 8 below normal, and broke their previous lowest August minimum temperature record by a healthy 0.7° in 43 years of computerised data. Farther north along the coast, Mandora's minimum of 6.0 was 7.5 below average. |
