A trough through central Queensland weakened during the day, but not before producing further useful rainfall totals in the state's southeast. Warkon and Pine Hills in the Maranoa recorded 66.6 and 63.0mm respectively in the 24 hours to 9am, while Rewan Station on the Central Highlands registered 52.0. Lady Elliot Island, 90km NE of Bundaberg, recorded 40mm between 3am and 9am for a 24 hour total of 93mm, while Heron Island Research Station's 24-hour total of 55.6 was just 0.1mm off an August record. During the early afternoon, a low pressure system formed in the Coral Sea, tightening pressure gradients in SE Qld and bringing increased rainfall and strong SE winds along the coast during the evening and overnight into Monday. The heaviest falls for the 24 hours to 9am Monday were around Brisbane, with Sandy Cape recording 78.6 and Mt Mowbullan 53.8. Much of the state's southeast recorded more than 25mm over the two days, bringing totals for the week to Monday morning for the parched area to between 50 and 150mm. Clear skies under a high pressure system together with low humidity allowed overnight temperatures to drop to record levels around Adelaide this morning. The Airport's overnight low of -0.2 was the lowest August minimum in 48 years of record, while east of the Mt Lofty Range, Murray Bridge also scored a record cold August morning with a minimum of -1.9 |
