About Australian Weather News

Hot in western SA and The Centre
Heavy rain in parts of northern Tasmania

Warm air over northern Australia, which has been gently persuaded southwards by a broad area of high pressure covering most of eastern Australia for the past couple of days, gave daytime temperatures 8 to 13 above average across most The Centre and down through western SA to the coast today. Marla, halfway between Woomera and Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway, recorded a top of 34.4°, its highest in 17 years of record.

The same low pressure system that gave Esperance WA a record August rainfall three days ago moved along the Tasmania's north coast this morning giving falls of 40 to 60mm along the Western Tiers that back the Bass Strait coastal strip. Rainfall south of Launceston and Devonport was the best in the area since late January, with Barrington, 20km south of Devonport, topscoring with 62.4mm.
