About Australian Weather News

NEWSBITS: Rain settles the dust in western NSW; Bushfire threatens cattle in northern SA; Snow in Tasmania

NEWSBITS: Five to 25mm of rain has fallen across most of NSW in the 48 hours to 9am, missing only the coastal fringe and the northeast. Though farmers could have wished for more, Rankin Springs producer Jock Munro says the 14.5 millimetres he has had is the biggest fall recorded all year.

A major wildfire in the far north of South Australia has killed cattle and threatened to jump the Stuart Highway overnight. Yesterday's strong, hot northerly winds have pushed the fire, which began a week ago, toward the Stuart Highway settlement of Indulkana, 100km south of the SA/NT border. Several thousand cattle are at risk, and backburning has been carried out to protect the settlement of Marla, farther south.

Light snow fell across the Tasmanian highlands during the day as colder air moved in behind a front that crossed during the morning. Tarraleah reported a 3pm temperature of just 2.4° .
