![]() ![]() NEWSBITS: Useful rain in NSW; Warm night in southern Qld |
A thunderstorm generated in the Cootamundra area mid afternoon travelled ENE over the next 6 hours. Hail up to 10cm deep blanketed a strip of farming country about 2km wide between Cowra and Canowindra, causing a hayshed to collapse and flattening crops. Hail several centimetres deep caused accidents and slowed traffic to 20km/h on the Mitchell Highway between Bathurst and Orange in the early evening, while a house in each of Millthorpe and Blayney lost their roofs. Buildings and equipment at the Wattle Flat Racecourse, 30km NNE of Bathurst, were destroyed by high winds, possibly tornadic. A near new steel shed was destroyed, and chairs, tables and barbeque equipment thrown hundreds of meters. NEWSBITS: A rainband moved eastwards through central and northern NSW this morning, giving falls of between 5 and 20mm to the Northern Tablelands and the Central West. The best falls, up to 30mm reported from some property owners, were on the Northern Tablelands. Falls in the Central West were lighter, but came as an excellent follow-up to light rain earlier in the week. Cropping areas in the northern wheat belt again missed out. To the north of the rainband, southern Queensland experienced an unusually warm night with minimum temperatures generally 8 to 10 above average. |
