Thunderstorm causes death in SE Qld
Windy and wintry across Tasmania

Thunderstorms which developed along a weak troughline swept across the southern Darling Downs and the Brisbane area this afternoon and early evening. A man died after he was struck by lightning while working on a roof at Marburg, 20km WNW of Ipswich. Brief heavy rain fell with the storms (see high rainfall box below), though totals were generally light with top falls in the 10 to 20mm range.

Blustery winds again hammered Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW as strong westerlies north of a 968hPa low beneath Tasmania pushed a cold front across the area. Top gusts reported were 135km/h at Maatsuyker Island off southern Tasmania (which also reported a 10 minute average of 115km/h) and 119km/h at Wilsons Promintory in southern Victoria. In Tasmania, snow fell during the day, settling to the 600m level, while thunderstorms with small hail added to moderate rainfall totals on the state's West Coast. Overnight rain also led to strong river rises in the Upper South Esk River in the state's northeast.
