A low pressure system that deepened to 962hPa just 700km south of Tasmania overnight gave the state a wild day of hurricane force winds, snow, hail and thunder. At 2.23am, the Maatsuyker Island Lighthouse, off Tasmania's south coast 120km SW of Hobart, reported a sustained wind speed of 150km/h with gusts to 169km/h before the anemometer broke (see detailed wind report below). Moderate snow fell during the day, with the snowline in the southwestern half of the state dropping to around 400m by late afternoon and an estimated 200m overnight into Tuesday. Snow also fell during the day on the northeast highlands. Hail and isolated thunderstorms were reported across the state. The top temperature for the day at Liawenee on the Central Plateau was just below zero. A squall line associated with the cold front also gave wind gusts to 122km/h at Wilsons Promintory, Victoria. The Bass Strait ferry Spirit of Tasmania was delayed more than 6 hours by gale force wind and 6m seas when trying to berth in Devonport this morning. Thunderstorms produced large hail in Queensland's Capricornia district. Westwood, 50km SW of Rockhampton, was battered by tennis-ball sized hail, while southern parts of Rockhampton received 3cm diameter hail. At Biloela and Calliope hail the diameter of 50c pieces caused crop damage. |
