Cold southwesterlies spread across southeastern states today in the wake of yesterday's strong cold front which dumped 23.6mm of rain on Lord Howe Island in an hour as it pushed east across the Tasman today. In Tasmania, snow fell again overnight, settling to around 200m in the south, west and centre of the state. Snow was reported from Maydena in the upper Derwent Valley, while Lake St Clair reported 20cm on the ground at 9am. In Victoria, both Longerenong, 20km ENE of Horsham, and Mangalore, 10km NNE of Seymour, reported record low overnight minima of -3°. In NSW, storms and showers developed during the evening as cold upper air moved over the coast. Pea-sized hail half covered the ground from a slow-moving storm south of Newcastle, while hail was also reported from Sydney suburbs. Light snow is likely to have fallen in the high country between Goulburn and Bathurst. |
