Some extraordinarily low humidities were reported from inland SA, northwestern Victoria and western NSW today in a warm northwesterly airstream following the movement of cooler, drier air into the region yesterday. With surface temperatures typically in the high 20s, dewpoints dropped below -30 yielding relative humidities as low as 1%. Automatic weather stations ceased to report dewpoint when it dropped below -30, but some of the lowest humidities were reported from northwestern Victoria, where Swan Hill Aerodrome reported a 2pm temperature of 27.1 with a dew point of -29.7. Temperatures in the high 20s and dew points in the mid to high -20s were reported from Mildura in Victoria; Woomera, Coober Pedy, Ernabella, Leigh Creek, Moomba, Port Augusta and Yunta in South Australia, and Broken Hill and Cobar in NSW. In central and western NT, the dry southern air allowed overnight minima to plunge to 11 or 12° below normal, with recordings of 10° typical. Doongan in the far north of WA's Kimberley reported a record October low of 14.0, while Lord Howe Island also notched up a new October minimum record with a chilly 8°. |
