A slow-moving, multicentred low meandered east across Victoria today giving widespread thunderstorms but not much in the way of rain. Storms fired up around midday from Ballarat to Wangaratta along a rain-bearing troughline that had slowly amplified east and south across Victoria from the northwest overnight. The storms developed rapidly, continuing to amplify east and south with the trough, and by 4pm there was a near-continuous band of thunderstorms from west of Ballarat through the Central and West Gippsland districts to the Snowy Mountains. Only Lake Eildon recorded significant rain - 12.6mm in the hour to 4pm - but hail was reported from Corryong, a severe thunderstorm with hail from East Sale and a supercell thunderstorm from Broadford. |
