Temperature extremes in east and west
Perth Airport experienced its coldest December minimum temperature in over 50 years when the thermometer dropped to 4.8° just on sunrise at 5.03am. The previous record of 5.2 was set back on 29/12/1957. The city site got down to 8.4 which is lower than the previous record of 8.6, also set in 1957, but a site change makes comparison of the records questionable. Minima were 6 to 10 below average across a large swathe of the Lower Southwest, Great Southern and southern Central Wheat Belt as winds dropped after a cold change yesterday dropped airmass temperature significantly. Meanwhile, centres around Melbourne and west to the SA border sweltered in daytime temperatures up to 13° above normal today in hot northerlies ahead of the same change.
