Unnamed cyclone brings rain, gales to NE NT

A tropical Low, which was only later identified by the Bureau of Meteorology as a category 1 cyclone, brought heavy rain and damaging gales to the northern Arnhem Land coast and Elcho Island today. The unnamed cyclone formed near the beginning of the month in the Arafura Sea not far away near Cape Wessel, moved south then slowed and deepened close to the coast yesterday. Today it passed over Elcho Island, damaging several houses, other structures, cars and a banana plantation as well as disrupting power supplies in Galiwinku community. Ngayawili AWS nearby recorded the highest wind gust of 115km/h, and also the lowest pressure of 989.8hPa at 8.10pm this evening. The strong onshore winds blowing into the narrowing waters of the southwestern Gulf of Carpentaria caused an estimated one metre rise in sea level overnight into Monday at Numbulwar. This, combined with high river levels, caused flooding around the mouth of the Rose River, inundating workshops.

The heaviest rain today was at Ngayawili which recorded 133mm in the 24 hours to 9 this morning and a further 139mm to 9am Monday. The highest fall to 9 this morning was 159mm at Cape Wilberforce, about 100km farther east along the mainland coast. In the 24 hours to 9am Monday 6 January, Milingimbi, on the mainland south of Elcho Island, topped the list with 192mm, its highest January fall on record.
