Tropical low brings torrential rain to NE NT

The tropical low that crossed the coast near Elcho Island on 5 January brought phenomenal rainfall totals to parts of the Roper-McArthur district to the south of Arnhem Land today. Limmen River, southeast of Roper Bar, recorded 346.6mm for the 24 hours to 9am, while nearby Nathan River recorded 340.3. Minor flooding was reported today on the Waterhouse River at Beswick, east of Katherine, where residents were evacuated for a short time. Over the past few days the low has maintained a central pressure of around 996hPa while moving slowly south into Arnhem Land.
